I kept the conversation solution-based, and said that I was more than happy to provide whatever extra documentation or explanation was necessary.

This actually helped to establish trust with the loan provider and showed that I was serious about working with them to clear up the confusion. With a professional attitude and a healthy assertiveness in explaining my financial situation I was able to continue with the pre-approval process.
